About the Show

A grumpy, solitary ogre sees his swamp invaded by banished fairytale creatures. To regain his privacy, Shrek strikes a deal with villainous Lord Farquad to rescue Princess Fiona from a fire-breathing dragon. Accompanied by a chatty Donkey, Shrek embarks on a journey that challenges misconceptions about beauty and companionship, ultimately finding love and self-acceptance. Filled with great characters, catchy songs and a sprinkling of potty humor, Shrek is a fun story with a great message and lots of laughs along the way.

The Process

Every rehearsal includes theater games, vocal and physical warm-ups and skill building. Actors are then grouped by age and role, rotating through vocal, dance, and acting sessions to learn show material and develop technique. Grouping by age ensures that performers are both appropriately challenged and fully engaged.

Grades K-2

Focus is on contributing to the ensemble, laying a foundation of theater and building confidence in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Lots of games and creative play are incorporated. Students are automatically placed in the K-2 ensemble. 2nd graders are given lines and solos as they demonstrate readiness desire.

Grades 3 and up

We focus on developing each actor as an individual. Actors participate in a three-part audition process and are cast in roles that best suit their current level of ability, not necessarily the role for which they auditioned. Vocal and acting skills are the primary factors in casting decisions, with additional consideration given to experience, behavior, age, and physical characteristics such as height. When two actors are equally suited for the same role, preference is given to the older actor or the actor who has more experience at K & Co, to ensure fairness.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals are once a week on the day you sign up for. Each cast will perform twice in a theater during show week. Focus is primarily on fun, inclusion and development of character, on stage and off.  Each child is encouraged and inspired to reach their full potential and build skills they can carry with them well beyond the curtain call.

Parent Volunteer Requirement

There isn’t one! K & Co is proud to offer a program that does not rely on parent volunteers. While families are always welcome to support and get involved if they choose, participation is completely optional—never required.

Lord Farquaad

The comically short, ruthless ruler of Duloc. He is in search of a princes to marry so that he can become king. Has an intensely unfair bias against fairytale creatures that stems from a resentment of his father. Self-absorbed, lonely, and cruel.

Fiona

The beautiful princess of Far Far Away, she transforms into an ogre every night when the sun sets. Rescued by Shrek and eventually falls in love with him. Quirky, blunt, and multitalented, she is not an ordinary princess.

Donkey

A talking donkey who joins Shrek on the run from Farquaad's guards. Quite the chatterbox, he is not deterred by Shrek's looks and practically forces himself into his good graces. Easily frightened and pushy, but also an optimistic with heart.

Pinocchio

The leader of the fairytale creatures. He is an animated puppet whose nose grows every time he lies. Plenty of sass with a penchant for lying.
